This letter was mailed on August 23, 1918 by a Czech Legionnaire in France with the 23rd Czechoslovak Infantry Regiment (small purple unit cancel at the left) to a prisoner of war in Vittoria, Italy. By the time the letter reached Sicily, Mr. Pt·ek was no longer a prisoner, but had joined the Czechoslovak forces in Italy. The letter was forwarded to Foligno, the location of one of the Czechoslovak induction centers in Italy. The large blue green cancel is the Czech postal cancel used at Field Post 217, the French field post which handled the majority of mail to and from the Czechs and Slovaks.
