To assist in recruiting volunteers for the Czechoslovak Legions, the artist Vojt_chÝ Preissig designed a series of propaganda cards which were issued by the Czechoslovak Recruiting Office in New York. This card, the ninth in the series, shows a ìSoldier of the Czechoslovak in Franceî throwing a grenade. The text above and below the illustration reads: ìArise ye Czech Sokols! Your motherland calls! Get with it!îÝ Mr. Preissig was killed in Dachau in 1944.

This post card was sent by legionnaire from _ilina to Polna on January 5, 1919. He writes they have just arrived from Italy. The postal cancel is from _ilina and covers the hand written ìLegionnaire mail.î The Czech unit cancel of the 1st Company, 35th Regiment is in red at top right.
