During
the Communist period, the regime declared Tomáö G. Masaryk
a non-person. His role in the establishment for Czechoslovakia
disappearing from texts and reference books as did his image
from all public display. When the United States honored Masaryk
as a "Champion of Liberty" in 1960, Czechoslovakia refused to
accept letters franked with these stamps. These covers are examples
of this procedure. The first day cover was sent to a Bratislava
address, but never got beyond Prague where the "Retour"
and the "Non admis" label were applied at Praha 120.
The second cover was mailed at an APO in Europe on April 11,
1960 and entered the international mail stream in Franfurt a/Main
on April 13. It was rejected at Praha 120 on May 6, 1960. Covers
with the Masaryk Champion of Liberty stamps were normally returned
to the sender.
