Multi-rate registered letter sent from Praha to Fremont, Michigan. The 20 Kčs Klement
Gottwald stamp paid the surface rate and registry. The letter contained postage stamps and was
cleared for “export” by the Czechoslovak financial control office of the customs bureau.
During the communist period, if collectors in Czechoslovakia wished to exchange stamps with
collectors in other countries they could only doing so legally by submitting both outgoing and
incoming shipments to a special control office. This office kept records to insure that annual
value limits were adhered to and the account balanced at the end of each year.
