Czechoslovak Philately
 RESULTS FROM STAMPSHOW'99

The largest US philatelic show, sponsored by the American Philatelic Society took place August 26-29 in Cleveland, Ohio. The Socitey For Czechoslovak Philately participated in this exhibition with exhibits, a general meeting, a Society dinner and breakfast, and lectures by Anton˙n Smid and Henry Hahn on the subject of Prague Pneumatic Mail. At its stand the Society sold the Czech post card commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Organization of the SCP as well as a cachet commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the opening of the Prague pneumatic system. Both of these items are still available from the Society Treasurer. Also available at the Society table was the gold medal winning book by Jan Karősek on Czechoslovak forgeries, a just published specialized catalog of Czechoslovakia for the 1918 - 1939 as well as other literature published in the Czech Republic and in the United States. The Society table was a meeting point for our members to greet old friends, make new ones, and examine both interesting and questionable material.

The results of the Czechoslovak exhibits are as follows:

  1. In the Literature Class, Ing. Jan Karasek won a gold medal for the book "PADELKY" (Forgeries) and the CZECHOSLOVAK SPECIALIST won a vermeil.
  2. Jaroslav J. Verner won APS gold as well as the APS Medal of Excellence 1900-1940 for his showing of "Czechoslovakia 1918-1939: Highlights of a Specialized Collection". He also received the gold award from the SCP for the best exhibit of Czechoslovakia exhibited by a member.
  3. Anton˙n Smid won APS gold for his exhibit "Prague Pneumatic Tube Mail 1899-1945". He further received the SCP silver award.
  4. Henry Hahn won APS gold for his exhibit entitled "Pneumatic Mails of Vienna, Prague, and Karlsbad".
  5. Charley Chesloe won APS vermeil for his exhibit entitled "Posta Ceskoslovenska 1919". He also received the Collectors Club award for best showing of Errors, Freaks and Oddities.
  6. Mirko L. Vondra won APS vermeil for his exhibit entitled "Hradcany - The First Issue of Czechoslovakia". He also received the SCP bronze award.
  7. Frank A. Garancovsky won APS silver for his exhibit entitled "Hradcany, Czechoslovakia's First Issue, An Aggregate of Varieties".
  8. Kimber A. Wald exhibited non-competitively with a showing of "Czechoslovakia - The First 10 Years".

At the meeting of the Directors of the Society for Czechoslovak Philately (SCP) Richard Palaschak was elected President and Robert Koschalk Vice-President. R. Tom Cossaboom was re-elected Secretary and Edwin W. Lehecka was re-elected as Treasurer. Officers appointed by the President remain unchanged for the present. The general membership elected Directors include: R. Tom Cossaboom, Frank A. Garancovsky, Henry Hahn. H. Alan Hoover, Savoy Horvath, Peter Z. Kleskovic, Robert Koschalk, Frederick P. Lawrence, Edwin W. Lehecka, John Miskevich, Richard Palaschak, Charles Rehman, Ludvik Svoboda, Jaroslav J. Verner and Kimber A. Wald.

The next Society Convention and meeting is scheduled for BALPEX 2000.
